An emaciated survivor stands between two Red Cross workers in May 1945. This man was likely a concentration camp prisoner who had been forcibly transferred to the Theresienstadt (Terezín) ghetto in spring 1945.
At the time of liberation in May 1945, there were a number of medical relief workers at Theresienstadt trying to aid prisoners and combat a typhus epidemic. This included representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Czechoslovak Red Cross, and the Soviet Red Army.
