SS chief Heinrich Himmler visiting Auschwitz

SS chief Heinrich Himmler (right) during a two-day visit to the Auschwitz camp complex in German-occupied Poland. This photo was taken during Himmler’s tour of the I. G. Farben factory construction site in the Polish village of Monowice on July 18, 1942. The day before, Himmler had witnessed the gassing of more than 400 Jews at Auschwitz-Birkenau. The victims had been deported to Auschwitz from the Westerbork transit camp in the German-occupied Netherlands.
