The Auschwitz-Birkenau killing center (indicated here) played a key role in "Final Solution," the Nazi plan to kill the Jews of Europe. The Nazis murdered approximately one million Jews at Auschwitz, most in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
