Portrait of Ignatz and Regine Auerbach

Ignatz and Regine Auerbach on their thirtieth wedding anniversary, Vienna, May 1940.

When they posed for this photograph, Ignatz and Regine Auerbach lived in Nazi Vienna. There, the Jewish couple was subjected to numerous antisemitic laws and regulations. Despite repeated efforts to flee Nazi control and join their daughter in the United States, they were unable to secure the visas required to leave. In October 1941, Nazi authorities deported the couple to the Łódź ghetto in German-occupied Poland. Less than a year later, in May 1942, Ignatz and Regine were sent to the Chełmno (Kulmhof) killing center, where both were killed.
