During the Holocaust (1933-1945), China became a safe haven for some Jewish refugees escaping Nazi persecution. Focused in Shanghai, the refugees included some 2,100 Polish Jews, approximately 4,000 Russian Jews, and more than 17,000 German and Austrian Jews.
