France

Germany invaded France in May 1940. As part of the armistice agreement France signed with Germany that June, France was divided into occupied and unoccupied zones. A new French government was established in Vichy and allied with Nazi Germany. This government ruled the unoccupied southern part of France until November 1942, when the Germans occupied nearly all of France. Until France’s liberation in the summer of 1944, Jews experienced antisemitic legislation, deportations, and murder. However, there were also people in France that rescued and hid Jews at great risk to themselves. Explore more content related to France during the Holocaust (1933–1945).
