Nazi soldiers invading Athens, Greece

Greece

On April 6, 1941, the Nazis and Italians (supported by Axis partners Bulgaria and Hungary) invaded Greece. Germany, Italy, and Bulgaria all occupied parts of Greece through 1943; Germany alone occupied the Greek mainland from 1943–1944. At the beginning of the Axis occupation, nearly 72,000 Jews lived in Greece; by the time the occupation ended in 1944, almost 60,000 Jews had died.
