This photograph shows people lining up in the Touloum refugee camp in eastern Chad. The camp was established in 2004 by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) for people fleeing violence in the Darfur region of Sudan (which borders Chad). The photo was taken in May 2004 by Jerry Fowler. Jerry went to Chad to meet with refugees from Darfur. He heard their firsthand accounts of the genocidal violence they were facing. At the time, Jerry was the director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's genocide prevention center.
