Alla fine di settembre del 1941, le SS, le unità di polizia tedesche e i loro ausiliari perpetrarono uno dei peggiori massacri della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Il massacro avvenne presso il fossato di Babyn Yar (Babi Yar), subito fuori Kiev, la capitale ucraina.
Gli oggetti preziosi mostrati in questa foto furono confiscati dalle guardie tedesche ai prigionieri del campo di concentramento di Buchenwald e poi ritrovati dalle forze americane dopo la liberazione. Buchenwald, Germania, dopo l'aprile 1945.
