This paper identification tag belonged to Alice "Lisl" Winternitz. She was required to wear it when Nazi German authorities forced her to leave her home in Prague and move to the Theresienstadt (Terezín) ghetto. The tag shows that Alice was on Transport AAr, which sent Jews from Prague to Theresienstadt on July 17, 1942. The number identifies her as the 395th person on the transport. Also on board were Alice's parents, Max and Paula. Her brother, Peter, had been sent to Theresienstadt on an earlier transport. Of her immediate family, only Alice survived the Holocaust.
