Photograph of the funeral for SS personnel killed in the December 26, 1944, Allied bombing targeting the I. G. Farben plant near the Auschwitz camp complex. During the raid, bombers also mistakenly hit parts of the camp.
This photo is from an album that belonged to SS officer Karl Höcker. The Höcker Album includes 116 pictures taken in and around Auschwitz between May 1944 and January 1945. The photo appeared on a page with three other images. The page’s original caption reads “Funeral of SS comrades after a terror attack” (“Beisetzung von SS Kameraden nach einem Terrorangriff”).
