Atlantic Charter
Even before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States government sought to support the Allies in their war against Germany and Japan. In August 1941, President Roosevelt met with British Prime Minister Churchill to establish their postwar priorities. These priorities included self-determination, free trade, and disarmament of aggressor nations. The leaders also expressed the desire to see no territorial changes against the will of the peoples concerned. The Atlantic Charter comprised eight points that later became the basis for other international agreements planning for the postwar period.
