I primi campi di concentramento furono istituiti in Germania, subito dopo la nomina di Hitler a cancelliere, nel gennaio del 1933. I "Battaglioni d'Assalto" (le SA) insieme alle forze di polizia crearono i campi per poter gestire le masse di persone che erano state arrestate come presunti oppositori del regime. I campi di sterminio erano stati progettati per attuare il genocidio di milioni di persone.
