The Armenian genocide (1915–1916) refers to the physical destruction of Armenian Christian people in the Ottoman Empire. At least 664,000 and possibly as many as 1.2 million Armenians were killed during this genocide. It is sometimes referred to as the first genocide of the 20th century.
