The Hitler Youth (Hitlerjugend) and the League of German Girls (Bund Deutscher Mädel) were developed as Nazi Party youth groups to introduce children and juveniles to Nazi ideology and policy. Established in 1933 as the Youth League of the Nazi Party, the Hitler Youth became increasingly popular and expanded as the Nazis rose to power. By 1940, more than 82% of eligible youth (ages 10–18) belonged to the Hitler Youth or the League of German Girls.
