Richard Baer at a dedication ceremony in Auschwitz

Auschwitz commandant Richard Baer (left) ceremonially accepts documents from SS-Sturmbannführer Karl Bischoff. Bischoff was the Chief of the Central Construction Administration of the Waffen SS at Auschwitz (Zentralbauleitung der Waffen SS und Polizei, Auschwitz OS). This photograph was taken on September 1, 1944, during the dedication ceremony for a new SS military hospital at the Auschwitz camp complex.

This photo is from an album that belonged to SS officer Karl Höcker. The Höcker Album includes 116 pictures taken in and around Auschwitz between May 1944 and January 1945. This image was one of four photos on a page with the caption “Tour” (“Besichtigung”).
