1937년경 독일 브레슬라우에서 입학 준비를 하는 2명의 유태인 소녀들(사촌 마르고와 로테 카셀). 입학을 축하하기 위해 선물로 가득찬 원뿔형 콘을 주는 것은 독일의 모든 어린이들을 위한 전통이었다. 마르고의 아버지인 사울은 뉘른베르크 법이 시행된 후에 해고되기 전까지 타이츠(Teitz) 백화점에서 일했다.
