Mass Deportation of Jews from the Netherlands Begins

German authorities began the systematic deportation of Jews from the Netherlands. Most Jews are deported to killing centers by way of the Westerbork transit camp. Between July 15, 1942 and September 3, 1944, transports carried more than 100,000 Jews to the Auschwitz-Birkenau killing center, the Sobibor killing center, the Theresienstadt ghetto, and the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Of these, only about 5,000 survived the Holocaust.
