Dayton Peace Agreement Reached

The three-year civil war in Bosnia-Herzegovina ended in 1995 with a peace agreement negotiated in Dayton, Ohio. The civil war was waged by Bosnian Serbs who objected to Bosnia-Herzegovina's independence from the former Yugoslavia and who were heavily backed by the Yugoslav armed forces. The peace agreement recognized Bosnia-Herzegovina as an independent state consisting of two entities, the Bosnian Federation and the Serb Republic, that are joined by a central government with limited powers.
