Destruction of the Łódź Ghetto

In August–September 1944, German authorities liquidated the Łódź ghetto, one of the last remaining Nazi ghettos. They deported about 67,000 Jews from the ghetto to the Auschwitz-Birkenau killing center. About two-thirds of these people were murdered in the gas chambers upon arrival.

The first transport from Łódź arrived at Auschwitz on August 9. A small group of prisoners remained behind to clean and dismantle the Łódź ghetto.
