Réfugiés à la recherche de nourriture à Alexandropol, Arménie russe. Photographie prise par John Elder. En 1917, Elder, un étudiant en théologie de Pennsylvanie, rejoignit l'équipe du Comité américain d'aide aux Arméniens et Syriens, qui venait en aide aux réfugiés. Pendant deux ans, Elder travailla bénévolement auprès d'orphelins arméniens. Pendant cette période, il prit en photo les réfugiés et leurs conditions de vie dans les camps.
