La Gestapo era la famigerata forza di polizia politica della Germania nazista. Durante il periodo nazista, la Gestapo crebbe e subì delle modifiche. I gruppi presi di mira dalla Gestapo cambiarono in base alle politiche e alle priorità del regime. Tuttavia, una cosa rimase costante: la Gestapo fu uno strumento invariabilmente brutale che applicò le politiche più radicali del nazismo.
Le truppe tedesche invasero la Polonia il 1° settembre 1939, scatenando la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. In risposta all’aggressione tedesca, Gran Bretagna e Francia dichiararono guerra alla Germania nazista.

Per tutti gli anni Trenta, la Germania nazista perseguì una politica estera aggressiva. Tale politica culminò nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale, che iniziò in Europa nel settembre del 1939. L’espansione territoriale del periodo prebellico e bellico portò milioni di ebrei sotto il controllo tedesco. Tra l’11 e il 13 marzo 1938, la Germania nazista annesse la confinante Austria. L’Olocausto fu la persecuzione sistematica attuata dallo Stato e l’assassinio di 6 milioni di ebrei europei ad opera del regime nazista tedesco, dei suoi alleati e dei suoi collaboratori. L’Olocausto è stata la persecuzione sistematica, organizzata dallo Stato, e l’assassinio di sei milioni di ebrei europei ad opera del regime nazista tedesco, dei suoi alleati e dei suoi collaboratori. Un processo che si è evoluto nel corso del tempo e ha avuto luogo in tutta Europa tra il 1933 e il 1945.
Nell’estate del 1941, dopo l’attacco della Germania all’Unione Sovietica, i tedeschi iniziarono a perpetrare fucilazioni di massa di uomini, donne e bambini ebrei nei territori sottratti alle forze sovietiche. Questi massacri facevano parte della “Soluzione finale della questione ebraica”, l’eliminazione di massa degli ebrei d’Europa.
Il 22 giugno 1941, la Germania attaccò inaspettatamente l’Unione Sovietica, sua alleata nella guerra contro la Polonia. Alla fine dell’anno, le truppe tedesche erano avanzate di centinaia di chilometri fino a raggiungere la periferia di Mosca. Poco dopo l’invasione, le unità mobili di sterminio iniziarono l’uccisione di massa degli ebrei sovietici. Le politiche di occupazione militare e civile tedesche causarono la morte di milioni di prigionieri di guerra e civili sovietici.
Alla fine di settembre del 1941, le SS, le unità di polizia tedesche e i loro ausiliari perpetrarono uno dei peggiori massacri della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Il massacro avvenne presso il fossato di Babyn Yar (Babi Yar), subito fuori Kiev, la capitale ucraina.
