Selmar und Elsa Biener ließen sich im September 1938 auf die Warteliste für ein US-Einwanderungsvisum setzen. Die Zahlen auf der Warteliste – 45.685 und 45.686 – geben die Anzahl der Personen an, die sich beim US-Konsulat in Berlin registriert hatten. Im September 1938 standen in ganz Deutschland etwa 220.000 Menschen, hauptsächlich Juden, auf der Warteliste.
