En 1939, ce paquebot allemand transporta près de 1.000 réfugiés juifs qui cherchaient un refuge temporaire à Cuba. Il fut contraint de rentrer en Europe après le refus de Cuba et des Etats-Unis de laisser entrer les réfugiés.
