Die Familie Kusserow war in ihrer Region aktiv an der Verteilung religiöser Literatur beteiligt und hielt private Bibelstunden ab. Sie waren Zeugen Jehovas. Die Kinder der Familie Margules tragen den „Judenstern“. Die ursprünglich aus Warschau stammende Familie Margules ließ sich in den 1930er Jahren in Paris nieder. Drei der Kinder wurden 1942 deportiert und getötet. Nur eine Tochter (rechts unten im Bild) überlebte den Krieg. Paris, Frankreich, 1941.

Mitte August 1940 nahmen die Lagerbehörden von Auschwitz ein Krematorium neben einer Leichenhalle in Betrieb. Das Gebäude befand sich unmittelbar an der Außengrenze des Hauptlagers. Im September 1941 wurde die Leichenhalle in eine Gaskammer umgebaut, in der mehrere Hundert Menschen gleichzeitig getötet werden konnten.
